Pennsylvania is one of two states in the nation that has hosted a prison for immigrant families, known as the Berks County Detention Center, the other being Texas. Families have reported verbal abuse, workers’ rights abuses, medical neglect, and in its first year of operation, a mother was raped repeatedly. In early 2021, the families from Berks were released and now there is uncertainty if ICE will detain other immigrant individuals. Families continue to be detained in the Texas centers. Please join us as we continue to lift our voices for the end of family detention in the US as well as the permanent closure of the Berks County Detention Center and for the building to be repurposed for human services.
