State Senator Lloyd Smucker to Introduce PA DREAM Act!

PICC is happy to announce that State Senator Lloyd Smucker (R- West Lampeter) yesterday announced his intention to introduce an in-state tuition bill for undocumented youth in Pennsylvania. Under current policy, many talented and committed young students who have lived in Pennsylvania for years do not qualify for the lower in-state tuition rate and therefore cannot afford to go to college. Under Senator Smucker’s proposal, young people who could provide proof of having attended two years of high school in Pennsylvania and could meet the residency requirements for financial aid, would be charged the lower in-state tuition rate. Senator Smucker's statement is available in the attachment below.

Sen. Smucker reached out to PICC a few weeks ago and on Friday January 11th a group of undocumented youth and representatives from PICC and JUNTOS had a meeting with Sen. Smucker and staff in Lancaster. Participants described their personal stories and how the bill would impact them and their community and we discussed priorities for the bill. PICC will continue to work closely with the youth who would be directly impacted by this bill and with partners to support the passage of this important bill.
