“Fast for Families,” Faith and Community Leaders to Call on Members of Congress to Back Commonsense Immigration Reform
On Tuesday, April 1 and Wednesday, April 2, “Fast for Families Across America” leaders DaiJoong Yoon, Executive Director of the National Korean American Service & Education Consortium (NAKASEK) and Lisa Sharon Harper from Sojourners will gather with local faith and community leaders to hold a series of events urging Rep. Charlie Dent (PA-15), Rep. Jim Gerlach (PA-6) and Rep. Patrick Meehan (PA-7) to call for a vote on immigration reform this year. In the fifth week of a six-week bus tour across the country, they will urge Representatives to support commonsense immigration reform and share the determination of immigrant communities to pass reform this year.
The “Fast for Families Across America” bus tour – covering 30 states and more than 14,200 miles – kicked off in Los Angeles on February 24 and is targeting 75+ key congressional representatives and mobilizing advocates from across the political spectrum to act, pray and fast.
“Fast for Families” reignited the immigration debate last November when Fast for Families leaders DaeJoong Yoon and others including Eliseo Medina and Cristian Avila abstained from all food, except for water – for 22 days on the National Mall. Joined by faith, labor and immigrant rights leaders and thousands across the country who fasted in solidarity, the movement drew national attention, including the support of President Obama, members of Congress – many of whom fasted – and national civil rights leaders.
